After a brief -business session, during
which a proposed-amendment to the con¬
stitution providing for seventy-five active
y members instead of fifty as at present, was
I considered. President Brewster introduced

I Dr. Elliott Coues,’who exhibited a number
1 of unpubished water - color paintings of
birds by Louis A. Fuertes, a student at
Cornell .’University. Dr. Coues made the
exhibit doubly interesting by explanatory-
remarks. During the remainder of the
morning session papers were read by sever¬
al members. r •’ -

-The sessions are to be continued tomor¬
row and Thursday, the hours decided upon
being 11 to 1 and 2 to 4 . This evening a
especial session is to he held at 8 o’clock.

■ when two memorial addresses are/ to be
delivered, one by Dr. Elliott Coues cn the
la.te Thomas H. Huxley, and the other by
,D. J. Elliott on the late -George N. Law¬
rence.'- All the sessions are open to the

The annual business meeting of the union
was held last evening at the residence of

Papers Rend nt the Ornithologists'

Union Today. -r

The last day of the thirteenth annual
congress of; the American Ornithologists’
Union opened this morning at 11 o’clock in
the lecture, room of the National Museum,
and -among the first -business transacted
was the passage of a resolution extending
the thanks of the union to the board of re¬
gent^ of the Smithsonian Institution for
the use ofrthe lecture room. • Thanks were
also formally expressed by the visiting

members to the local members for the en¬
tertainment ard courteous treatment fur-
' nished.

The papers read and discussed at the
morning session were: “On the Standing of
Ardetta Neoxena,” by Frark M. Chapman -
“What Constitutes Publication,” by J. A.
Allen, and “The Value of the Tongue in
the Classification of Birds,” tbyiE. A. Lu¬
cas. Each of the papers was discussed gen¬
erally by the members present.

The customary recess of one hour for
luncheon was taken at 1 o’clock, after
which Mr. William Palmer read an able
essay on “A Critique on Trinomial Incon-
i sistencies.” This was followed by an'.un-
usually interesting exhibition of lantern
slides of birds by Mr. Palmer. At 4 o’clock
this afternoon the union will adjourn, to
meet next at Cambridge, Mass., Monday.
